When I was first learning photography, I went to workshops where the assignment was to build your own branding library. The method? Photographers took turns photographing each other.
And I was scared shitless. Face twitching. Smiling ear to ear. Completely unable to relax my face. (Then came the laughing. Tears-streaming, can’t-take-myself-seriously laughing. Every time.)
I’m telling you this because it’s my best answer to the question I hear most. Is brand photography actually worth it?
October marks nine years of me doing this for a living, so here are the benefits of brand photography for entrepreneurs, as I’ve lived them from both sides of the lens.
The short answer
Brand photography gives an entrepreneur three things: trust before the first conversation, a clear visual direction for the whole business, and one library of images that works across a website, social media, and press. The photos matter less than what happens after.
It answers “who is this person?” before anyone asks
Someone lands on your website, your Instagram, your speaker page. They are sizing you up, and they are doing it fast.
Your photos are your introduction to people you never get a chance to meet. A blurry crop from a friend’s wedding doesn’t make you look bad. It makes you look like you haven’t decided who you are yet.
And you have. You decided a long time ago. The pictures just haven’t caught up.
The planning call is the real first session
Here is the part nobody warns you about. The session starts long before the camera comes out.
I ask who you serve, what you sell, and where these images will live. Then I build the shot list around how you will actually use them. It is not your job to figure out all the shots you are going to need. That’s my job.
Multiple clients have told me the planning call does double duty. Yes, it helps you prepare and know what to expect. But the bigger gift is that it gives the two of us a chance to get to know each other. Inhibitions drop. By shoot day, you are not facing a stranger with a camera. You are hanging out with someone you already like.
Some of this comes from my past lives. A counseling psychology degree taught me to actually watch people, not just look at them. Years of producing events, and then a bespoke cake studio, taught me that nobody remembers the plan. They remember how the room felt. So I plan down to the last detail, and then I make the room feel easy.
One of the quiet benefits of brand photography: everything else gets easier
One session. One curated library. Used everywhere.
Your website. Your Instagram grid. Your newsletter header. The podcast host who emails on Tuesday asking for a photo by Friday. The designer who has been waiting on your images for three weeks (they have opinions about that).
Take my client Jenny, a spiritual medium and a beautiful soul. She redesigned her own website earlier this year, and then she was ready for more. New directions that made her toes tingle. Our session was the catalyst. She updated every one of her brand images, and her presence online moved up a level to match where she was heading.
That is the part that surprises people. It’s not only the images. It’s the internal change. The email you stop dreading. The pitch you finally send. The “yes” you say because you finally recognize the person in your own photos.
You look like yourself, on purpose
I hear one thing more than any other. “I’m so nervous. I hate being photographed.”
Good company. Nobody loves being in front of the camera in the beginning. I have taken more self-portraits than I would like to admit, because I’m not going to ask you to do something I won’t do myself.
After her session with me, my client Katie put it better than I could: “You feel like you got to hang out with a lifelong friend, and the pictures were a bonus.”
That is the goal. Your branding is a polished version of you. Not a character. Not someone you are not. (I said that on the Talk Branding to Me podcast, and I meant every word.) People can smell a character from a mile away. Photos that feel like you, not a performance, are the whole point.
What brand photography will not do (the honest part)
It won’t fix an offer nobody understands. It won’t make strangers buy. It won’t turn you into a different person, which nobody can pull off for long anyway.
What it does is make everything you already do land better. It is also an investment of money and of time. And you will be amazed how much you can get done in a single day when the planning is solid.
Is brand photography worth it for a Louisville entrepreneur?
Try this. Scroll back through the photos you are using right now. Your website, your Instagram, your bio.
Do they look like the person you are today? Or the person you were three years ago?
If you are not sure, I made something for exactly that. The Honest Edit is a free, 17 page look at the five things I notice when I look at your brand photos. No fluff, no sugarcoating. Very me.
And if you want to talk about what a session could look like for your business, tell me what you are building.
Onward. xx J
